Calvin Roman, Jamel Brown, and Manual Mejia, who police say were involved in the major vehicle theft ring dating back more than seven month, are now facing several charges. Also being sought for his involvement in the theft ring is 30-year-old Nicholas Anthony Perrault. Deputies tell us the theft ring operated throughout Onslow County including cities and military jurisdictions. Detective Sgt. Lincoln and Detective Sgt. Hernandez of the Onslow County Sheriffs Office have identified more than 40 victims whose vehicles were broken into. Jacksonville Police Department and Military Law Enforcement have also connected the suspects to several vehicle B&Es in their jurisdictions. This ring is possibly responsible for more than 60 vehicle B&Es in Onslow County between January and July 2014. One of the suspects was in possession of a vehicle stolen from Durham, North Carolina, so it could be anticipated this ring could be involved in vehicle B&Es in other North Carolina Counties other than Onslow. The suspects said they only went into unlocked vehicles. According to Detective Sgt. Lincolns and Detective Sgt. Hernandez investigations, no force was used to gain entry into any of the vehicles in this case. Police say, one could not be guaranteed that locking a vehicle would assure it against being broken into but in this investigation and many other cases, locked vehicles have been a deterrent to B&Es of vehicles. The men with sex addiction had started watching pornography, and more of it, at an earlier age than those in the control group. “The patients in our trial were all people who had substantial difficulties controlling their sexual behavior and this was having significant consequences for them, affecting their lives and relationships,” Voon explained. “In many ways, they show similarities in their behavior to patients with drug addictions,” she said. “We wanted to see if these similarities were reflected in brain activity, too.” The study participants’ brain activity was monitored while they watched either pornographic videos or sports videos. While watching the pornographic videos, the men with sex addiction showed much greater activity in three areas of the brain compared with men in the control group. These three areas of the brain — the ventral striatum, dorsal anterior cingulate and amygdala — are involved in processing reward and motivation, and also become highly activated in drug addicts in response to drugs. The study was published July 11 in the journal PLoS One. “Whilst these findings are interesting, it’s important to note, however, that they could not be used to diagnose the condition,” Voon cautioned. “Nor does our research necessarily provide evidence that these individuals are addicted to porn — or that porn is inherently addictive. Much more research is required to understand this relationship between compulsive sexual behavior and drug addiction.” According to the researchers, prior studies have suggested that sex addiction — an obsession with sexual thoughts, feelings or behavior that they are unable to control — affects as many as one in 25 adults. Brains of Sex Addicts May Be Wired Like Those of Drug Addicts, Study Finds

The quick transition is largely thanks to the cooperation of former owner Wade Newsom, who has spent the last month working with Jaywalkers and training Mink. Several existing staff members will carry over, further easing the process. I always hoped this would be something bigger than just a coffee shop, Newsom said at the grand reopening Thursday night. Its a bittersweet transition, but mostly sweet. The main difference between Thursday and Friday morning is where the money ends up. Net proceeds at Boomerang will go to benefit A Way Out, a local nonprofit that provides scholarships for people with drug and alcohol addictions to get treatment. It will also provide a public outlet for an organization thats usually private by necessity. I wanted to be able to provide an opportunity for clients, alumni, and others in the community to have jobs, said Jaywalker Lodge director Bob Ferguson. Jaywalker Lodge is a 20-bed, 90-day rehab facility that has operated in Carbondale since 2005. The organization has since added 10 beds each at Jaywalker Solutions and Jaywalker U, which provide ongoing support, and also provides outpatient services. Ferguson estimated that roughly 80 percent of those who successfully complete the program stick around for a while, providing a strong support network of active alumni. Jaywalkers maintains an alumni community center right next door to Boomerang, and although many meetings and programs will need to remain anonymous, Mink hopes to host events and open the double doors between the spaces. We want to give back and have a presence, he said.
